Grantham, PA — Messiah College will honor its national champion men’s and women’s soccer teams this Thursday night, the school announced Tuesday.
Fans, family and friends of the teams are invited to a “soccer bash” in Larsen Student Union beginning at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 10. Ice cream will be served to all in attendance.
On tap are the introductions of the teams, comments from coaches and players and a special message from Messiah College president Kim Phipps. Championship game footage will be aired along with an opportunity to mingle with the teams following the brief ceremony.
Messiah remains as the only NCAA institution — regardless of level — to win both a men’s and women’s soccer national championship in the same season. This year’s titles complemented the school’s feats both last year and in 2005.
Messiah’s men’s team defeated Calvin College by a 2-0 score to win this year’s championship on Saturday night. That result followed a 2-1 win over a talented and physical Williams College side Friday evening.
The men’s team continues to add to its lore as the most successful program in NCAA Division III history, holding NCAA records in tournament wins (57) and national championships (seven).
The Falcons’ women, meanwhile, handed Washington University-St. Louis a 1-0 loss in Saturday’s other national championship. Messiah defeated post-season rival The College of New Jersey by the same score in Friday's semi-final. The women’s team adds to its 2008 and 2005 championships with this year’s hardware, finishing with an overall record of 25-0-1.
All ‘Final Four’ contests were played Friday and Saturday at the Blossom Athletic Center in San Antonio, Texas. The teams safely returned to campus Sunday afternoon.
