Widener sophomore Abby Schaffer (Easton, PA) continued her standout campaign by ending second in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Greencastle, IN.

Schaffer broke her own school record with a leap of 3.86 meters. She ended tied for second among three other competitors, but got the nod in that group on a judge’s decision.

Anna Heim of Moravian won with a vault of 4.16 meters, breaking the three-year-old meet record.

Schaffer’s debut season with the Pride continues to get better and better. She won the ECAC Championship last week with a meet-record leap of 3.85 meters to automatically qualify for nationals. She also won the Middle Atlantic Conference title on February 27 by covering 3.81 meters, also a meet record.

Schaffer just missed becoming the second woman in school history to win an NCAA individual title. Lauren Lucci captured the shot put at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Widener opens the outdoor season with the Danny Curran Invitational, which is March 26-27.
