Widener freshman guard Lil Carney (Narbeth, PA) continued to pile on the awards as she was named D3Hoops.com Mid-Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year.
It is Carney’s second Rookie-of-the-Year honor as she was chosen such for the Commonwealth Conference. She also was picked first team all-league.
Carney announced her arrival immediately by scoring in double figures her first five games and averaged 14.6 points her last seven games entering the ECAC South Tournament. In between, she poured in 26 points on January 13 against Albright and notched 19 points and 10 rebounds December 28 vs. nationally ranked Kean.
She ended 12th in the conference with 11.1 points per game, tied for fifth with 3.43 assists per game, seventh with a .773 free-throw percentage, 10th with 1.86 steals per contest and ninth with 1.39 three-pointers per game.
It was another standout campaign for the Pride (16-12, 11-3 CC), who defeated Gwynedd-Mercy in the ECAC South quarterfinals for their first postseason victory in school history. It was Widener’s fifth postseason appearance in school history and second in the ECAC. It also competed in 2005 as well as playing in the NCAA Tournament in 1982, 2004 and 2009.
The team also notched what is believed to be a school record in conference wins and advanced to the league tournament a seventh time in eight seasons.
