Fourth-seeded Widener received a balanced scoring attack in the first half and rolled to its first postseason victory in school history, 77-51 over No. 5 seed Gwynedd-Mercy in the ECAC South Tournament quarterfinals at Schwartz Center.
Widener advances to the semifinals on Saturday to face No. 8 seed and defending tournament champion Juniata, which upset top-seeded Delaware Valley. The game will take place on the campus of St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA at a time to be determined.
Widener (16-11) put things out of reach in the first half, opening a 52-24 lead by shooting an astounding 61 percent (22-of-36) from the floor and limiting GMC to only 29 percent (8-of-27). Freshman Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) had eight points and seven rebounds in the half with sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) and junior Alex Held (Westminster, MD) adding eight points apiece.
The 52 points in one half were a team season high, besting the 42 against Alvernia on February 11.
Pritz, named second team All-Commonwealth Conference, ended with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and 14th career. Senior Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) poured in 11 points with Dellinger grabbing nine rebounds for the Pride, who owned a 42-32 edge on the boards.
Kristy McGrath scored nine points with Kate Wisniewski (Newtown Square, PA), Erica Fulforth, Brittany Neill and Ashley Duffy adding seven apiece for the Griffins (17-10), who shot 33 percent (18-of-54) from the field.
The Pride are making their fifth postseason appearance in school history and second in the ECAC South Tournament. They also competed in 2005 as well as playing in the NCAA Tournament in 1982, 2004 and 2009.
