CHESTER (PA) – Delaware Valley College sophomore Tom Masterson won the long jump and the javelin individual title, placed in the top six in four other events and was named the Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the 2010 Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Widener University. Masterson helped the Aggie men place fifth out of 11 teams at the event.
Delaware Valley notched 63 points to trail only Widener (190), DeSales University (169), Elizabethtown College (144.5) and Messiah College (107) in the team standings.
Masterson was simply dominant at the three-day championship, especially on Saturday afternoon as he not only won the crowns in the two events, but also registered NCAA provisional qualifying standards in both of them. He was also the second Aggie track athlete this year to earn special recognition from the MAC as fellow sophomore Travis Pitts was named the Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the Indoor Championships in February.
Masterson had a leap of 23 feet, 0.75 inches to take top honors in the long jump. He then recorded a throw of 200 feet, 2 inches to win the javelin championship. Earlier in the day, Masterson took sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.43 seconds and helped the Delaware Valley 4x100 relay finish fourth with a time of 44.62 seconds. On Friday, he took third in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 5.75 inches and placed fifth in the high jump by clearing the bar at 6 feet, 4 inches.
Saturday produced three other scorers for the Aggies in freshman Joe DiPetrillo, Pitts and senior Chip Brumbaugh placed eighth in their events. DiPetrillo was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 180 feet, 9 inches while Pitts was injured but still took eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 22 seconds. Brumbaugh, a senior ran the 5,000-meter run in 15 minutes, 51.40 seconds to take eighth.
Brumbaugh and junior Jon Petrilak each took fifth in an event on Friday to earn four points for the squad. Brumbaugh was clocked in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33 minutes, 8.36 seconds while Petrilak racked up 4,343 points in the decathlon.
Delaware Valley also received points from freshmen Anthony Jackson and Chris Whitley as they placed eighth in the triple jump (41-5.75) and the discus (121-10) respectively.
