ITHACA, N.Y. - Meghan Donoghue's solo shot in the sixth inning was the deciding run as Laura Snyder twirled a 14-strikeout gem to lead #21 Lebanon Valley past Polytechnic (N.Y.), 1-0, in NCAA Regional play at Ithaca College.
The Dutchmen (32-11), making their second NCAA appearance, won for the first time ever in the tournament and will advance to face #24 Ithaca, a 2-1 winner over Dickinson, on Friday at 4 p.m. in a winner's bracket game. The win also means LVC will play into the weekend with at least a Saturday game in either the winner's or loser's bracket of the double-elimination, eight-team regional.
Snyder (14-6) was outstanding as she struck out 14 and scattered four hits. She recorded at least one strikeout in each inning, and struck out the side twice.
Donoghue's go-ahead home run, her seventh of the year, set a new single-season record for homers at LVC.
Polytechnic threatened in the sixth and seventh innings; in the sixth, the Blue Jays got back-to-back one-out hits by Ryan Graybill and Elizabeth Shrandt, but Snyder got out of the jam with a strikeout and a quick fielding play on a bunt to end the inning, while in the seventh, they left a runner on second as Snyder induced a foul-out and struck out Natasha Taylor to end the game.
Miranda Merilli gave up just the one run and five hits for Polytechnic.
LVC had runners in scoring position in the first, second and fourth innings but didn’t reach the scoreboard until the sixth. The Dutchmen posted five hits in the game with junior Katie Freeman posting a team-high two hits.
