PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore Dan Fiorito (Yonkers, N.Y.) of the Manhattanville College baseball team was named a D3Baseball.com All-American Honorable Mention following a very successful first season with the Valiants, as announced by D3baseball.com on Wednesday afternoon.
Fiorito, who missed all of his freshman year due to injury, had a smooth transition to the collegiate game this year, batting .420 with 60 hits, five home runs and 41 runs batted in. His 60 hits tie him for sixth place all-time on the school's single-season list, while his 41 RBIs are tied for ninth as well. In 41 games this season, Fiorito, who was selected as the honorable mention designated hitter, served as DH 21 times in 2010 and also spent time on the mound and in the outfield. In seven appearances on the mound he went 2-1 with 23.1 innings and five starts.
This is the first-ever All-American recognition for a Manhattanville baseball player and the 22nd in school history. His selection makes him just the third non-hockey player at Manhattanville to receive All-American honors and the first since Katie Frattarola '02 of the Valiant women's lacrosse team in 1999.
Fiorito ranked in the top-three in many team offensive categories in his first collegiate season, including second in batting average. His five home runs ranked him third on the team and he also was fourth in RBIs. He saved one of his biggest hits of the year for the Freedom Conference Championship game, as his game-changing grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning against FDU-Florham helped the Valiants to their first Freedom Conference Tournament title.
Following his superb season, Fiorito was one of six Valiants honored with a spot on the All-Freedom Conference team, as the sophomore was named the first-team designated hitter.
With Fiorito in the middle of the lineup, Manhattanville finished with a 22-21-1 overall record and a 12-9 Freedom Conference record in addition to its second conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth. Fiorito will return to the team next year with three years of eligibility remaining.
