Jeremy Nolt and Wes McCollum won individual titles in singles play at the MAC Tennis Tournament hosted by Wilkes University.
Eight different players advanced to the semifinals in both singles and doubles play after stellar play yesterday, but six of the eight fell in either the semifinals or finals held today.
In singles play, Nolt defeated Brok Walker of Elizabethtown 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals before claiming the title at the No. 3 position with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jason Mifsud of Lycoming. At the No. 4 position, McCollum was just as impressive as he downed Dean Tahir of Manhattanville 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 in the semi’s before taking the title with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jon Gingrich of Lycoming.
At the No. 5 position, Evan Katz cruised to the finals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brad Sweigart of Lebanon Valley, but fell to Andrew Rivera of Manhattanville 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in the finals. Clarke Freeman had the same fate at the No. 6 position after beating Brian Osborn 7-5, 6-2 before falling 6-4, 6-1 to Karim Mahmoud over Manhattanville.
In the doubles competition, the tandem of Nolt and Jon Rohrbachfell to Jansen Hein and Luke Hostetter of Messiah 8-1 in the semifinals at No. 1 doubles, but Freeman and Cesar Leon defeated Eric Fritzges and Josh Riel of Elizabethtown 9-7 before falling to Lance Dorfi and Tahir of Manhattanville 8-3 in the finals.
At No. 3 doubles, Katz and McCollum downed Andrew Deckert and Joel Ramos of Lebanon Valley 8-5 in the semifinals before falling to Mahmoud and Rivera 8-3 in the finals.
The Men will be competing in the Freedom Conference Team Championship this weekend and will be looking for their third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
