WILKES-BARRE - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has named the Wilkes University women's tennis team an All-Academic Team for the seventh consecutive year. The Lady Colonels, whose 3.7 grade point average easily surpassed the qualifying mark of a 3.2 GPA, also placed seven on the ITA Scholar-Athlete list.
Among those seven were Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, Lancaster Mennonite), Amanda Holyk (Scranton, Scranton Prep), Anna Mitchell (Montclair, NJ, Montclair), Melanie Nolt (Manheim, Manheim Central), Rebekah Shanaman (Richland, ELCO), Xiaoqiao Zhang (Zhengzhou City, China, Warren Hills (N.J.) and Rachel Zomerfeld (Courtdale, Wyoming Valley West).
On the men's side, two individuals were honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes, including Jefferson Bohan (Danville, Danville) and Wes McCollum (Harrisburg, Central Dauphin). Bohan and McCollum, along with Bybel, Holyk, Mitchell, Shanaman and Zhang, were also named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll this past June.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
