HAVERFORD, Pa.  Elizabethtown's third fastest distance medley relay time in program history was also the fastest time in Division III this season. Aaron Focht, Matt Rever, Chris Niles and Russell Speiden teamed up to run a 10:02.68 Friday night at Haverford's Seamus McElligott meet.

Focht started the race by running 1200m, followed by Rever's 800m, Niles' 400m and Speiden's 1600m. The Jays rallied past a pair of teams from the host Fords, using Speiden, a 2011 All-American in the mile, to complete the comeback in the final leg of the race. The four Blue Jays drew within four seconds of the school record set by Tyson Evensen, Drew Graybeal, Patrick Donovan and Steve Sanko at Boston's St. Valentine's Invitational in 2005.

Elizabethtown's time topped all Division III schools in the DMR so far this season. Wabash is currently second best at 10:03.35 and SUNY Geneseo sits third at 10:06.60. Coach Brian Falk did say that the time will have to be watched closely as other meets are run over the remainder of this month. The top 13 teams that declare for the event will qualify for March's NCAA Division III Championships.

The pair of Haverford teams finished second and third, while the only other MAC school in the race, Widener, was over eight seconds back of the Jays in fourth.

In the night's only other event, a few of E-town men's cross country members got their first competition of the indoor season in the 5000m. Senior Evan DeArmitt led four Blue Jay finishers with a fifth place run in 15:15.78. DeArmitt's time was a career best and eighth fastest all-time by a Blue Jay. Sophomore Stephen Welsh also broke under 16 minutes. Welsh crossed the line in 15:47.12.

Most of the team will compete tomorrow as the McElligott Meet finishes up at Haverford.
