Team Standings Take Shape at 2014 Swimming Championships After Day Three

YORK, Pa. - After the conclusion of the third day at the 2014 Middle Atlantic Conference both the men’s and women’s team standings begin to take shape as Albright College on the men’s side and Messiah College on the Women’s side continue to lead heading into the fourth and final day.

In the men’s team standings Albright continues to run away from the field and with just 12 finals events left leading second place Misericordia by 149.5 points.  The Cougars who claim to the second place spot have earned 330.5 points, leading third place Hood College (300) and fourth place Widener (260.5).

The women’s race for the top team spot remains much closer than the men as Messiah holds to just a 23 point lead over Misericordia with 390 points.  Misericordia who has earned 367 points lead defending champion Albright and Widener College who are in third and fourth place respectively.

In both men’s and women’s events Saturday evening Middle Atlantic Conference swimmers combined to set four new MAC championship meet records and five NCAA B cuts.

The Albright 200 freestyle relay team broke the first MAC record of the evening topping the field with a time of 1:24.08.  The next MAC meet record didn’t fall until the men’s 100 butterfly when Lycoming’s Dan Woods took home the first title for Lycoming since 2006.  Hood’s Alex Bodine and Albright’s Alex Bauer also broke the previous MAC record but the top time went to woods winning the event with a time of 50.73.

The final two MAC records fell in the final events of the night in the men’s and women’s 100 backstroke.  In the women’s race, Widener’s Laura Harris broke her own top time cruising to the victory and reaching an NCAA B cut with a time of 56.36.  Just moments later Albright’s Ralph Porrazzo shattered his own record set in 2013, when he pulled away from the field in 49.95.

Hood’s Alex Bodine finished second behind Porrazzo in 100 backstroke but still hit an NCAA B cut with a time of 51.23.  Also hitting NCAA qualification marks in Saturday night’s final sessions were Jan Ikeda from Lebanon Valley who took the top time in the women’s 100 butterfly, winning in a time of 57.28.  Albright’s Codi Herr hit a B cut in the same event finishing just behind Ikeda in second with a time of 57.75.

The fourth and final day of the 2014 Middle Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships will feature 12 more events that are up for grabs.  Sunday’s preliminary session will begin at 10:00 AM will the finals session will get underway at 6:00 PM.  Prior to the start of tomorrow night’s finals session all MAC senior swimmers will be recognized.
